At the back, behind the grille, is a paddlewheel across the width of the pool.

Press the fast button at the front of the pool and the paddlewheel will turn pushing the pool water through channels, which come together at the front to give you a constant pool wide current to swim against.

Press the fast button until the water is at the speed you want.
